Required Textbook:

  • A textbook is NOT required for this course. All materials will be available online.

Prerequisite Knowledge:
This course is designed to build on the understanding of teaching and pedagogy that is acquired in Professional Semester I. The main objective of this course is to expose students to a variety of Internet based technologies and evaluate each of them for their usefulness and efficacy within their classroom (what might work in someone else's classroom, might not work for you).

Prerequisite Skills:
Due to the fact that this course is offered entirely on-line, it is absolutely essential that each student possess the following skills and equipment:

  • Completion of PS I or a third-year standing (a minimum of 60.0 credit hours).
  • A basic familiarity with computers (be able to turn one on and get around without too much difficulty).
  • Easy access to a computer that is connected to the Internet (either at the University in the computer labs or at home). While highspeed Internet access is not a requirement, it is suggested in order to help reduce the amount of time spent looking for information.
  • An e-mail client and Internet browser (they can be separate or part of the same piece of software). Your Internet browser must be capable of accessing WebCT - check requirements.
  • All correspondence for this course will happen through your U of L e-mail address. If you are not actively using this account, then you need to forward it to an account that you are using. The instructor is not responsible for missed e-mail messages.
Course Description:
This course is designed to introduce students to the wide range of Internet based technologies that are available to use within the classroom today. Each technology will be examined and used to complete weekly assignments and evaluated by the student with an eye to their usefulness to the student and their applicability in their classroom. The culminating project will be the creation of an Internet based resource that will draw on these technologies to provide a unique learning experience for a group of students.

During each topic, there will be a discussion assignment in which students will be expected to contribute their views of the technology being used as well as interesting ways that they feel it could be integrated into the classroom.

Course Structure:
There are four basic modules in this course. The objectives for each module are shown below. As well, the Scope and Sequence chart gives you an idea of how I have split up these modules. You may have noticed that this chart is not complete. The reason for leaving this open at this time is to give me a chance to get to know you and figure out what works and what doesn’t work for this group. You will help me complete the chart as we move through the course!

As you look at each “Week” you will see that I have organized it into the following categories:

  1. Introduction – gives you an idea of what is going on and a brief explanation of why we are doing things this way.
  2. Objectives – what you will be able to do by the end of the lesson.
  3. Readings – I have listed readings/resources that will help you meet the objectives for the week.
  4. Activities – these are smaller activities that are added together for an Activity grade and are designed to help you meet objectives for the lesson. Think of these as the types of things that you would be doing in 2 - 3 hour, face-to-face classes.
  5. Assignment – either the actual assignment or a reminder / tips helping you get that A that you are all striving for in this course. If you click on the assignments, you will be taken to a document that provides the detailed information and marking guide / rubric for the assignment.
Assignments:
There are 5 assignments for this course. Click on each link for more information on the specific assignment
  • Assignment 1 – download and identify ICT Outcomes specifically related to the use of internet-based technologies.
  • Assignment 2 – identification of a subject, grade level and topic for the final project.
  • Assignment 3 – creation of a safe use document for yourself, your students and their parents.
  • Assignment 4 – creation of an internet-based resource that covers your chosen curricular outcomes.
  • Assignment 5 – there will be a series of weekly reflective activities that will be required.

When I create an assignment area in WebCT, it requires a due date. Assignments cannot be graded until this due date passes. As a result, the Assignment due dates are very clear. I recognize that some of you will have technical problems or may have a legitimate reason for an extension. I do have some flexibility and will, on an individual basis, accept late assignments without penalty. However, it is YOUR responsibility to contact me in order to establish a date that is acceptable to both of us.

The only exception is the Final Project – I do NOT have any flexibility with this date as I have to get your projects marked and your marks submitted to the Registrar’s Office.
