The Beatles

The Beatles  began in 1960 playing covers of songs by Carl Perkins, Barrett Strong, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and other  American rock and roll groups such as the Miracles, the Marvelettes,  the IsleyBrothers and the Shirelles. Early  recordings of their own material with producer George Martin were ‘Love me do’ and ‘P.S. I love you’(1962). Their first album Please Please Me was released in 1963. In February 1964 the Beatles toured the USA and appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show to 73 million television viewers. They soon became a household name  in America and held the first five places on the Billboard Hot 100.

The Beatles were the front line of the ‘British Invasion’ of English groups on the American charts which began in 1964.

The Hollies formed in 1962 by singer Allan Clarke and guitarist/singer Graham Nash. Their US hits were ‘Bus Stop’ and ‘Look through  any window’.
